ABSTRACT

To summarize thepractice and experience of targeted food hygiene security measures in a major field activity of the army in order to provide references for diverse tasks. Considering the characteristics of heavy activity, field operations and the influence of COVID-19, a series of support measures related to food hygiene surveillance were strengthened. The first measure was review of recipes, health management and training of employees, procurement and storage of raw materials, warehouse management, processing and manufacturing management, disinfection of tableware, as well as food sample retention. Secondly, the control points that probably cause spread of COVID-19 in the phase of food service industry were analyzed, then relevant supervision and guidance were carried out from the aspects of employees and diners, foods of cold chain logistics, environment and emergency response plan. Finally, in order to assure the safety of food processing and crowd-gathered diet in the field, the following measures were guided to adopted including selecting the site of cooking and dining properly, cleaning the environment, making dishes using pure water and semi-manufactured foodstuff, keeping food sanitation in the course of transport and dinning, as well as supervising the robot machines for cooking automatically. The main experiences were listed as follows: promoting food safety awareness of the principal and the employees of the canteen, enhancing legal enforcement capacity and technical capacity of health supervisors, focusing on new risks related to food safety as well as reinforcing the management of health supervisors and employees in the field.

ABSTRACT

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, mask-wearing has become a common practice in the foodservice industry to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases. Like kitchen utensils, a mask may serve as a vehicle for cross-contamination of pathogens during food handling. The objective of this study was to quantify cross-contamination between tasks of handling contaminated chicken and chopping lettuce. Chicken breasts were inoculated with a high or a low level of nonpathogenic Escherichia coli surrogates (ca. 6 or 4 log CFU/ml) and sliced for 1, 5, or 10 min. During slicing, duplicate, single-use medical masks were touched each minute. One mask was immediately sampled, but the second mask was used to contaminate lettuce by touching the mask each minute while chopping the lettuce for 5 min. E. coli were enumerated from the second mask and lettuce. Masks touched while slicing both high- and low-inoculated chicken showed significant contamination (0.8-4.9 log CFU/cm2) after each slicing scenario of 1, 5, or 10 min (P > 0.05). Lettuce was significantly contaminated regardless of inoculation level (1.0-3.2 log CFU/g). Slicing time was a significant factor in some cases (P < 0.05), whereas inoculation level was not (P > 0.05). Data indicate masks can be a source of cross-contamination if not replaced appropriately.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of preclinical studies on the safety and immunogenicity of an inactivated COVID-19 vaccine candidate to warrant further clinical evaluation. Method(s): SARS-CoV-2 positive nasopharyngeal swab specimens were confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction and next-generation sequencing. The safety and immunogenicity tests of the COVID-19 vaccine were carried out in rats and Rhesus monkeys, and Balb/C mice and Rhesus monkeys, respectively. Result(s): The candidate vaccine was well tolerated and induced promising levels of SARS-CoV-2- specific IgG1, IgG2a, and Granzyme B in Balb/C mice, and anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike IgG and neutralizing antibodies in Rhesus monkeys. Based on cVNT results, the inactivated vaccine in 0.5 and 1 microg/100 microL doses was able to induce a neutralizing effect against the SARS-CoV-2 virus up to a dilution of 1:512 and 1:1000. The protective efficacy of the vaccine candidate was challenged with 2 x108 PFU of live viruses and confirmed by lung CT scan and histopathological evaluations compared to the control group. Repeated intramuscular injection of the candidate vaccine was generally well-tolerated in Rats and Rhesuses. No significant side effects were observed in rats injected with ten full human doses and in the Rhesus monkeys with three full human doses. Conclusion(s): Based on the findings presented in this study, it is recommended that this vaccine be moved into human testing commencing with a phase I clinical trial.Copyright © 2021 Muslim OT et al.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Urine drug testing has been the standard for monitoring opioid compliance in chronic pain patients. The COVID-19 pandemic created a dilemma for opioid monitoring by severely limiting in-person testing due to safety concerns. Oral fluid toxicology emerged as a feasible, alternative test due to its ability for remote sample collection under virtual supervision while minimizing infringements on patient privacy. However, the efficacy of these two tests for reliably detecting opioids should be explored prior to transitioning to testing only with oral fluids. Method(s): In this study, we compared morphine levels in oral fluid and urine toxicology studies from 5 randomly selected patients from a Chronic Pain Center who were regularly taking high doses (>=90 mEq) of extended-release morphine. Charts from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic until July 2022 were reviewed for urine and oral fluid testing results and medication regimens. All oral fluid and urine test results and collection methods were validated by a nationally recognized toxicology lab. Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) reports were reviewed for each patient to observe pre-testing prescription trends. Result(s): We found that the overwhelming majority of patients had at least 1 false negative oral fluid test result. The remainder of the oral fluid results were below threshold (10 ng/mL) or ranged from 11.3 to 54 ng/mL of morphine. 80% of patients (n = 5) had at least one negative or positive-but-below-threshold (10 ng/mL) result in their oral fluid sample analyses. In contrast, none of the urine studies had negative results. Urine studies for all patients were positive for morphine and well-above primary cutoff values (100 ng/mL) with levels >6000 ng/mL. PMP reports did not reveal any aberrant drug taking behavior in any of the patients. No unprescribed medications or illicit substances were detected in any of the oral or urine samples. Conclusion(s): The prevalence of false negative results for the detection of morphine metabolites in oral fluid toxicology may be higher than clinicians are currently aware of. Physicians and other providers monitoring opioid compliance in chronic pain patients should keep this possibility in mind when selecting toxicology tests and making conclusions about aberrant drug-taking behavior. Larger scale studies are needed to compare oral fluid and urine levels of morphine with extension to other commonly prescribed opioids. ABSTRACT

Procurement of game animals is a major source of revenue for hunting clubs in Poland. For several years, the game meat buying market has been showing an upward trend, but this situation is also influenced by random factors that negatively affect the value of the game meat buying market. For several years in our country we have been struggling with the ASF virus, and since 2020, negative effects in the economy related to the occurrence of the SARS-CoV virus have been observed, also affecting the hunting sector with its activities. The aim of the study was to analyze the dynamics of game meat procurement in Poland in the years 2009-2021. The data concerned the three most important species, namely deer, roe deer and wild boar. The analysis covered the quantity of game meat, procurement value and the average price of game meat depending on animal species. The conducted research confirmed an upward trend in the volume and value of game meat procurement for all the analysed game species. Similarly, the average procurement prices of roe dee and wild boar meat with the exception of red deer, showed an upward trend. The study confirmed the negative impact of the ASF virus and the SARS-CoV-2 virus on the game meat buying market in Poland.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Saikosaponins (SSs) constitute a class of medicinal monomers characterised by a triterpene tricyclic structure. Despite their potential therapeutic effects for various pathological conditions, the underlying mechanisms of their actions have not been systematically analysed. Here, we mainly review the important anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antiviral mechanisms underlying SS actions. METHODS: Information from multiple scientific databases, such as PubMed, the Web of Science, and Google Scholar, was collected between 2018 and 2023. The search term used was saikosaponin. KEY FINDINGS: Numerous studies have shown that Saikosaponin A exerts anti-inflammatory effects by modulating cytokine and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and lipid metabolism. Moreover, saikosaponin D exerts antitumor effects by inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis and autophagy, and the antiviral mechanisms of SSs, especially against SARS-CoV-2, have been partially revealed. Interestingly, an increasing body of experimental evidence suggests that SSs show the potential for use as anti-addiction, anxiolytic, and antidepressant treatments, and therefore, the related molecular mechanisms warrant further study. CONCLUSIONS: An increasing amount of data have indicated diverse SS pharmacological properties, indicating crucial clues for future studies and the production of novel saikosaponin-based anti-inflammatory, efficacious anticancer, and anti-novel-coronavirus agents with improved efficacy and reduced toxicity.

ABSTRACT

With the growing demand for the development of intranasal (IN) products, such as nasal vaccines, which has been especially highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, the lack of novel technologies to accurately test the safety and effectiveness of IN products in vitro so that they can be delivered promptly to the market is critically acknowledged. There have been attempts to manufacture anatomically relevant 3D replicas of the human nasal cavity for in vitro IN drug tests, and a couple of organ-on-chip (OoC) models, which mimic some key features of the nasal mucosa, have been proposed. However, these models are still in their infancy, and have not completely recapitulated the critical characteristics of the human nasal mucosa, including its biological interactions with other organs, to provide a reliable platform for preclinical IN drug tests. While the promising potential of OoCs for drug testing and development is being extensively investigated in recent research, the applicability of this technology for IN drug tests has barely been explored. This review aims to highlight the importance of using OoC models for in vitro IN drug tests and their potential applications in IN drug development by covering the background information on the wide usage of IN drugs and their common side effects where some classical examples of each area are pointed out. Specifically, this review focuses on the major challenges of developing advanced OoC technology and discusses the need to mimic the physiological and anatomical features of the nasal cavity and nasal mucosa, the performance of relevant drug safety assays, as well as the fabrication and operational aspects, with the ultimate goal to highlight the much-needed consensus, to converge the effort of the research community in this area of work.

ABSTRACT

Plant cells release tiny membranous vesicles called extracellular vesicles (EVs), which are rich in lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and pharmacologically active compounds. These plant-derived EVs (PDEVs) are safe and easily extractable and have been shown to have therapeutic effects against inflammation, cancer, bacteria, and aging. They have shown promise in preventing or treating colitis, cancer, alcoholic liver disease, and even COVID-19. PDEVs can also be used as natural carriers for small-molecule drugs and nucleic acids through various administration routes such as oral, transdermal, or injection. The unique advantages of PDEVs make them highly competitive in clinical applications and preventive healthcare products in the future. This review covers the latest methods for isolating and characterizing PDEVs, their applications in disease prevention and treatment, and their potential as a new drug carrier, with special attention to their commercial viability and toxicological profile, as the future of nanomedicine therapeutics. This review champions the formation of a new task force specializing in PDEVs to address a global need for rigor and standardization in PDEV research.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Bupivacaine is a local anesthetic which has been increasingly used in the post-operative state for pain control. Hepatotoxicity is a rare complication, and few cases are reported in patients with chronic liver disease. We present a case of acute liver injury from bupivacaine use in a healthy patient without prior history of liver disease. Case Description/Methods: A 68-year-old female with a past medical history of primary hypertension and recent nontraumatic complete tear of the right rotator cuff, presents to the hospital with fatigue, loss of appetite, and nausea. She recently underwent an arthroscopy of the right shoulder with repair of the rotator cuff two weeks prior. Her surgery was uncomplicated, and patient was started on bupivacaine ONQ pump infusion at 5 ml/hr for three days for post-operative pain. Further history reveals patient is non-alcoholic without prior liver disease, including cirrhosis. Review of systems is concerning for associated generalized abdominal discomfort. Physical exam demonstrated jaundice with scleral icterus with mild periumbilical tenderness to palpation without hepatosplenomegaly or ascites. Labs demonstrated elevated total bilirubin of 10.2 mg/dL with Alkaline phosphatase, ALT, and AST being 924 U/L, 429 U/L, and 279 U/L, respectively. Imaging studies including CT abdomen and pelvis with contrast, abdominal ultrasound, MRCP, and portal vein doppler were negative. Additional work up for underlying liver disease including acetaminophen and ethanol levels, SARS-CoV2, Hepatitis panel, EBV antigen, and urine toxicology were negative. It was determined patient had bupivacaine induced hepatotoxicity. Patient's health improved with conservative management and she was discharged with instructions for close monitoring of her LFTs. Discussion(s): Bupivacaine is an amino-amide anesthetic which binds to the intracellular portion of voltage-gated sodium channels and prevents depolarization of pain signals. It is metabolized by the liver and thus reports of hepatotoxicity, although rare, occur in patients with underlying liver pathology. Our patient became symptomatic with acute rise in LFTs. An extensive workup for other etiologies of acute liver toxicity was negative. Rapid vascular uptake of the drug is the most common reason for bupivacaine toxicity;and this remains a possibility for the mechanism of toxicity in our patient. A prior case report of bupivacaine hepatotoxicity demonstrated a cholestatic pattern, which is consistent with our findings.

Introduction: In the US there has been a recent outbreak of adenovirus hepatitis in the pediatric population. However, to our knowledge, there has been only one reported case of adenovirus hepatitis in an immunocompetent adult. We have identified another such case. Case Description/Methods: A 25 year old female with no medical history presented with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and subjective fevers for two weeks and was found to have transaminitis 25-30x the upper limit of normal, which were: AST 791, ALT 542, ALP 92, and total bilirubin of 2.9. The patient reported no prior history of liver disease. She denied alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs, or herbal medications, but did report taking acetaminophen 1500 mg daily for two weeks. Serum acetaminophen levels were normal and serum and urine toxicology were negative. US with doppler was unremarkable, CT showed cholelithiasis, MRCP showed a normal common bile duct without obstructive calculus. Autoimmune causes of hepatitis, ceruloplasmin and alpha-1 antitrypsin were all unremarkable. HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV, CMV, HSV, VZV, EBV, HIV, and COVID19 were all negative. Ultimately, the serology for adenovirus was positive. After a week of supportive treatment, the patient's labs trended down and symptoms resolved. Discussion(s): Adenovirus is confirmed by a rise in antibody titer or by virus detection. Coagulative necrosis in histopathology is a finding in liver biopsies if they are pursued in unexplained cases of liver injury. Ultimately, adenovirus hepatitis can be diagnosed once all common causes of hepatitis have been excluded. In the current outbreak, only children have been getting adenovirus hepatitis. In adults, a high prevalence of neutralizing antibodies contributes to immunity, and therefore only in immunocompromised states, do adults get such an infection. Supportive care with IV fluids, electrolyte correction, and antiemetics usually is enough with eventual symptomatic and laboratory improvement as it was for our patient. Studies have shown that extensive disease can be treated with antiviral drugs, cidofovir, and ribavirin. Our patient's history of acetaminophen use is a confounder, however, her normal serum level and her symptoms suggestive of an infectious cause made acetaminophen less of a culprit. We hypothesize that our patient's use of acetaminophen when she was initially exposed to the virus is what made her susceptible to developing adenovirus hepatitis and we hope this case adds insight for clinicians dealing with future adult cases.

In COVID-19 pandemic in the world, alcohol (ethanol) can be listed as a sterilizing disinfectant. It absolutely played a Messianic function on the sterilization effect. And it is said that it has one more function called "salinity reduction" but that function is not widely known. The two functions (Sterilization & Salinity Reduction) mentioned above are extremely important regarding the theme of "raw seawater into beverage" in this study. It is thought that if the two functions are achieved other water quality items such as NO-2 and other items can be cleared with comparative ease. To put briefly the feature of modern waterworks in a word, it can be said that "source of water is river water and its sterilization is chlorine". In this study, we set up it with a completely new sanitization method (great reset), that is, "source of water is mixtures (seawater and rainwater) and its sterilization is ethanol". And it can be also expected that the capture and storage of ethanol as a renewable resource is basically possible by utilizing sunlight as a natural power. Therefore, we think that this resolves itself into a question of the choice (sense of value/culture) of the users. It means that how users finally balance out with three factors, i.e., cost, risk (safety) and benefit. Based on the viewpoint mentioned above, we examined the possibility of raw seawater into beverage using ethanol as a renewable resource to create humankind's wisdom to the settlement (breakthrough) of the water scarcity in the world including Asia and Africa. As a result, we have obtained the new findings that suggest the possibility of raw seawater into beverage using ethanol as a renewable resource.

Background: Smoking is a risk factor for the development and worsening of respiratory diseases, including COVID-19 infection. Smoking can increase the risk of the severity of COVID-19 by two times because in smokers there is an increase in the expression of the ACE-2 gene by 25% compared to non-smokers. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between smoking status and smoking index on the course of COVID-19 disease treated at Dr. M Djamil General Hospital. Method: An observational analytic study with a retrospective cohort approach on COVID-19 patients who were treated at Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital. Data were taken from January to March 2021. The relationship between smoking status and smoking index on the course of COVID-19 was analyzed by Chi-Square. Results: This study found the most age was above 50 years with a vulnerable age of 50-59 years (28.4%) and female gender (56.7%). Non-smoker status (64.2%) and moderate smoking index (51.4%) were the most commonly found in this study. Clinically non-progressive COVID-19 (53.7%) was the most common. This study found that the maximum length of stay for COVID-19 patients was less than 21 days (53.7%) and the outcome of patients recovered (62.2%). This study found a significant relationship between the smoking index on the clinical progress of COVID-19 patients and there was a significant relationship between smoking status and the outcome of COVID-19 patients. This study found that smoking status and the smoking index had no significant relationship with the length of stay of COVID-19 patients. Conclusion: Smoking status is related to outcomes in COVID-19 patients and the smoking index is related to a progression in COVID-19 patients treated at Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital.

Morus alba L. is a member of family Moraceae that have been traditionally used to cure various ailments in many Asian, South African and European countries. The plant has significant economic value due to its sweet and nutritious fruits which are used in various culinary applications. In addition, the leaves of this plant serve as the primary food source for silkworms, making it a crucial component of the global silk industry. Furthermore, the plant has a long history of use in traditional medicine, and its leaves, bark, and fruit have been utilized for their various therapeutic properties. Morus alba has been extensively studied for its phytochemistry, ethnopharmacology and toxicological profile, with many studies showing promising results. However, despite the growing interest in this plant, there are very few extensive reviews on this topic. The current review provides a comprehensive summary of the distribution, traditional and ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities and active chemical constituents of M. alba. This study includes distribution and ethnomedicinal use of this plant in different regions of India, explored the phytochemicals, their structure and pharmacological significance. Furthermore, a comparative analysis and investigation revealed the potential of this plant for treating cancer, diabetes, inflammation, hepatoprotection, immunomodulation, antimicrobial properties, and potential for fighting coronavirus. Though, detailed studies are required on the clinical use of M. alba against human diseases. Additionally, the present study revealed that a thorough toxicological investigation must be carried out to ensure its safe and effective use as a health-promoting medicinal plant.

Cold storage is expensive for smallholder farmers and seed processors in developing countries. Smallholder farmers continue to resort to traditional storage methods such as polypropylene (PP) bags for maize grain storage. They often dose the grains with chemicals to preserve them. However, hermetic bags have proven to provide superior protection to grains during storage without chemical treatment. With the advent of the COVID-19 virus which distorted many food systems across continents, stakeholders in the grain industry need to adopt better systems to reduce post-harvest food loss and improve food security. In this study, maize grain quality, nutritional content and viability were compared under three storage methods (PP bags with Phostoxin treatment, cold storage, and hermetic bag) over a storage period of four months. The results showed that the hermetic bag maintained the moisture content (MC) of the stored grains with 0.40% variations from the initial MC of 13% at the end of the storage period compared to 0.70% and 1.10% for grains stored under cold storage and in PP bags, respectively. Grain damage after the 4th month of storage in the hermetic bag had only increased by 0.40% from an initial 13.3% before storage compared to an increase of 6% for cold storage, which was attributed to unstable power during the storage period, and 4.30% for grains stored in the PP bag. Carbon dioxide concentration in the hermetic bag was maintained at about 11% throughout the storage period indicating low microbial activity. The hermetic bag technology was identified as the best option for quality preservation during storage of maize grain over the other methods, and its adoption by smallholder farmers in Ghana should be considered.

The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus led to a worldwide pandemic. Emergency use of an investigational medication, Paxlovid, was approved for patient 12 and older who tested positive for COVID-19 and at high risk for severe infection. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic condition causing inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a type of IBD centralized in colon and commonly treated with Immunosuppressive drugs. We present an adolescent with UC treated with paxlovid due to being on tacrolimus who developed with suspected tacrolimus toxicity. CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old female with UC presented to the ED with vomiting and fatigue after paxlovid ttreatment for COVID. The patient's UC treatment included tacrolimus along with ustekinumab. She had been diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 and prescribed Paxlovid bid x 5 days due to immunosuppressive status. Tacrolimus was held during treatment. Once paxlovid completed, tacrolimus was restarted. Two days later, patient presented to ER for vomiting, fatigue, headaches and myalgia. Labs revealed a tacrolimus level of >60 ng/ml. Electrolytes and Creatinine were normal. Toxicology felt this was due to interaction between paxlovid and tacrolimus. Patient advised to hold tacrolimus for 48 hours and repeat levels were 15.8 ng/mL. Symptoms resolved and level repeated three days later and was 2.9 ng/mL. DISCUSSION: Tacrolimus is an immunosuppressant, commonly used for management of organ transplants but also been found effective in treatment of IBD. Tacrolimus requires close monitoring as toxicity may lead to acute or chronic kidney disease. The normal concentration is between 5-15 ng/mL. Due to rapid escalation of the COVID-19 pandemic, Paxlovid was approved for emergency use for treatment of high-risk patients. It is administered as a 5-day oral course consisting of nirmatrelvir and ritonavir. Our patient was prescribed Paxlovid due to risk secondary to immunosuppression. She was appropriately instructed to stop tacrolimus. Ritonavir is a cytochrome P450 3A inhibitor and can increase plasma concentration of tacrolimus. She restarted tacrolimus treatment 12 hours after her last dose of Paxlovid and presented with symptoms and a level consistent with toxicity. This level was concluded to be due to drug interaction between tacrolimus and Paxlovid. After further withholding of tacrolimus, symptoms improved, and levels normalized. Previous reports in transplant population stress importance of decreasing the dose of tacrolimus or withholding during the course of paxlovid treatment. This case demonstrates the importance of not only ceasing tacrolimus when administering paxlovid, but continuing discontinuation for longer period post completion of therapy to minimize interactions.Copyright © 2023

Novel safe and stable teracationic Zinc phthalocyanine is efficient against bacteria, fungi and viruses also under indoor light Recently a novel photosensitizer with outstanding properties, phthalocyanine LASU has being developed. The compound possesses unprecedented stability and antimicrobial activity. It can be activated by a weak indoor light of 270 lux and shows the activity against G+ and G- bacteria as well as fungi and viruses. Over 3 log inactivation of bacteria and fungi on the surface of a LASU-impregnated material can be achieved in 1/2-1 h of illumination with a regular indoor and/or natural light. A cotton filter impregnated with 0.1 g/m2 of LASU eradicates on its surface the coronavirus HCoV-229E by 3.5 log in 30 minutes under indoor/natural light of 500 lux. The molecule is photostable and remains active for weeks with no significant bleaching. Another remarkable property is its ability to bind to cellulose support. It readily attaches to a fiber substrate through electrostatic interactions, moreover, the size of LASU ring matches the pitch of cellulose polymer, making the conjugate unusually strong. Hence the compound does not leech to water and is stable against temperature and surfactants. The toxicology studies also reveals that substance is non-irritating for human skin, and is non-mutagenic, which makes it suitable for human-wearable items.Copyright © 2023

ABSTRACT

Drop in nutrition value during food logistics impacts the health of consumers. Vegetables, fruits, fish, milk lose nutrients during logistics if it is not properly monitored. Real-time tracking and monitoring, large data handling and secure business transactions are key to the effective operation of supply chains. The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us the need for handling unforeseen situations in various sectors. Limitations to logistic operations, inaccessible warehouses, shutdown of consumer outlets for an unexpected duration, have affected the supply chain drastically. This has laid emphasis on the need for technology-based solutions that can monitor, control and make quick decisions, that can reduce losses. With this scenario as a background, a system architecture has been proposed to detect the nutrient value of food by periodically monitoring temperature and humidity in real-time and alerting the cold chain entities in cold chain environments. This architecture is proposed as an integration of Internet of Things (IoT) with cloud-based storage, to provide real-time data collection at the end-user, seamless storage and computation in the cloud and secure transactions at the business layer. An experimental setup of the system architecture has been configured and the implementation has been tested at a preliminary level. The performance of the application is analyzed and the proposed web application is efficient for large scale supply chain applications, provided scaling of hardware resources.

Alcohol (ethanol) is the most widely detected drug in forensic toxicology casework and an increase in consumption of alcohol was reported during the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase in consumption could be attributed to rising stress levels and social isolation. To determine whether the pandemic had an impact on ethanol positivity and concentrations in cases analyzed by the Dallas County Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences, blood ethanol results were evaluated from January 1, 2019, through December 31, 2021. This time frame captured ethanol prevalence and concentrations before, during, and immediately following the pandemic for comparison. The average ethanol concentration in postmortem casework over the three years for each quarter ranged from 0.116 g/100 mL to 0.142 g/100 mL while the average concentration in driving while intoxicated (DWI) was higher, ranging from 0.173 g/100 mL to 0.188 g/100 mL. The ethanol positivity rate for postmortem casework remained relatively the same at approximately 20% during the time frame, while there was a decrease in ethanol positivity rate for DWI casework during the pandemic in April - June (Q2) 2020. However, the positivity rate returned to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2020. Despite the self-reported surveys of increased alcohol consumption during the pandemic, a corresponding increase in average ethanol concentrations was not observed in Dallas County and the surrounding area.Copyright © 2023
